First Frost on the Funny Farm and The Tale Of The Shivering Pup

Monday morning, it was very cold outside. Caleb was to arrive early to stay with us for the day so this Mommy actually had over a half hour of total silence before the sun rose to start her day.. thats a blessing and oh so rare these days. I looked out the darkened window to notice a little creature running around our cul-de-sac. "Strange" I thought, "it's probably that crazy sweatered chihuahua of the accordian players house on the road behind us, the little rat sized one who likes to dig out under the fence."

When I looked again, I noticed this little guy running under a neighbors car and appeared to not be holding so still. So I went out, infamous red warm up pants and the most comfy sweatshirt... walked in that direction in the paling sunrise. I called out to whatever it was, trying to see under this car... and out came this tiny puppy, no kidding, probably not even 8 weeks old. So skinny and small, that it obviously was not capable of warming itself. My conclusion: when the new mom a few doors down came home to grandmas at 630a with her infant, her brothers puppy must have slipped out in the dark and underneath the view of the baby carrier. Theyve also been known for having outside and wandering older puppies when the brother's been home to stay for a few months (this has happened now 3 times since we moved in almost 2 years ago.)

Wouldnt it be that the puppy followed me all the way to our front porch and cried at our front door for quite some time.

(side note: Funny how we started this blog about a month ago telling ya'll the story of the kitten that adopted us on the front porch. Last year it was the twin baby deers that used to sun bathe in our backyard and we would feed regularly, assuming that their mom must have been killed during all the building thats been going on in neighborhoods beyond our tree lined property. Plus we have our own crazy cat who fakes injuries to get only mommy's attention and our 80lb weimaraner who thinks shes a human and growns when she is displeased with her surroundings... on top of that, well, me (enough said) and my hilarious husband and our ever so silly toddler... a funny farm 2 blocks down from the historic downtown area of Wake Forest!)

So I gave the sweet thing some food, some warm water, a warm blanket out of the dryer and eventually put out Benson's cat carrier all covered with warm old towels.

Once little Caleb arrived with Ms Ashley, I would peek out the door intermittently to see if he was still there... and that sweet thing slept in the warmly covered and blanketed carrier for hours. Once the sun came up far enough over the house and after a nice long warm nap... the little puppy moved out to the sunlight and the next time I looked out the window (approx 11am.) The tiny pup had made Brighton's stroller his new bed....

Approx 130ish, I got brave and decided that the three of us (Brighton, Caleb and I were going for a walk in the sunshine.) I dressed Brighton warm, bundled up baby Caleb and got him snuggly in the warm wrap, got myself together and we were off. Stroller wiped out, no pup in sight. Here's my pic of our grand endeavor before we left... note that while I was taking this picture... I felt something warm on my feet.

And so it was.. as we left the driveway, the puppy followed us all the way to the end of the road. I tried sending him home and discouraging him... but he was determined to run his short little stubby legs as hard as he could to follow us wherever we went. I felt like we were a page out of the "Are You My Mother?" book. Eventually, he was too far from home to turn back on his own, fearing he would get lost or run over... I stuck the little guy in the bottom of the stoller and he rode with us for quite some time. Once we got down to the church on corner, he jumped out and wanted to walk again. At this point it was a clear indication that this was far too much for me to handle (an infant strapped to by chest, a toddler in the stroller and attempting to protect and not ram with the wheels, a lost puppy!!) Wouldn't it figure that as we returned to our end of the road, the little fella ran up to the house where I called him from... the sister came to the door, called for it and it went inside!!

What a crazy morning.... but a gentle reminder of the gratefulness and promises we can claim that God never leaves us or abandons us even in the storms, not for a season, a year, a month, a week, a few hours or in a breathe... not in the cold, the warmth, the rain, the sun, the good times or the bad.... He is ALWAYS there :)

Amidst all this for our Monday, we treasure our Monday mornings here in the Sellers' home because its the only day where John doesn't go to work till 10a, he is usually gone before Bright wakes up and some days doesn't return until after Bright is in bed. While sweet Caleb napped, we ate breakfast together and Brighton got lots of play time with Daddy. Here are some funny photos that I snapped of cuddle time yesterday morning... really, when you look at them... its no wonder that folks here laugh at us or along side us... when most of our dear friends dont have any pets at all (not even a goldfish) and here we are.... Mommy, Daddy, toddler, nannying for a 2 month old, a crazy cat and huge dog and a puppy sleeping on the porch!!

So how did our nannying time come to an end? I am so glad you asked..... Bright woke up hysterically crying at 530p, full of slobber and biting his hands. Caleb remained sleeping soundly. Gave him some motrin and eventually sat Bright in his booster and fed him some very cold grapes to help him feel better. John called, said he was going to be home later than expected, so I was trying to make my hamburgers with the broiler. The oven filled with smoke which filled the house which set of the smoke detector which made the animals run, Brighton laugh, me sweat and the baby... stayed sleeping. That crazy thing proceeded to go on and off approxiamtely 15 times. And baby Caleb... was still sleeping, did I fail to mention that he stayed asleep through all this chaos?

So what does Ms Ashley return to yesterday evening? Heres a synopsis: me on a kitchen chair fanning my smoke detector with a Cottage Living magazine, a house that stinks like a grill and full of smoke like a chimney :) The most encouraging thing that happened through it all... she looked at me, giggling, holding Brighton and said that shes so glad to see that I dont always have it all together. Boy, did that make me smile... because most days are just like a said before... just another day on the Funny Farm. So we woke up her little man, they left, I snarfed down my burger which my son ended up eating half up because he could sign please and eat faster than I could pull off and bite myself. I ran in the other room, changed my clothes out of the stank smoke smell, got Bright situated and with a sippy cup...our dear friends arrived 5 mins later, I gave Uncle Drew a run down of Brights dos and donts, Jessi and I scooted out the door to the small group wives meeting!! What a very very crazy day... yet so very sweet and I rose again to do it all over :) This is the blessing, and literally a blessing, of the life that I lead.... married to a wonderful man, have an amazing son that weve been given to shepherd well, sweet friends, animals and gifts beyond measure and so much more.... how could a girl look back and not be ever so thankful to Him who bestows all things, works all things out for good and gives more than enough grace to make it through the day!!

OH and Ps- We had our first frost this morning (Tuesday) and we are VERY excited :)
